You can choose to sell links yourself or have a text link broker do that for you. If you sell it yourself you will of course get all the money but need to put a lot of effort in the selling. With a broker, you have to give the broker some percentage but on the other hand you save a lot of time.

To know what prices to set for the links you can simply see what kind of prices the broker sells them for. To reach break-even in you selling the links yourself compared to a broker you probably need a site with at least PageRank 6 or 7.

If possible, you should choose keywords that are not that common, to be able to get through the competition. It will be easier to get notice on a keyword like “bearded collie” than “dog”. More people might search for “dog” but due to the competition, it will tougher to get high in search engine results.

The basic idea for search engines today is to give you the most relevant result when you make a search. So try to put yourself in their position and consider why your page should appear on a certain keyword.

Once you have chosen your keywords, you have to make them appear on your site, preferably in the title tag as well in headlines in the page and in the text body. For banner ads you can choose between networks like Casale Media, Tribal Fusion, Advertising.com, Tradedoubler etc. Among these networks the price model can differ some, but the most common one is CPM, which means cost per thousand impressions. If you sign up for these services you can then choose what format on ads you would like and you can also choose among which ads you want to be displayed on your site.

Which one to choose is depending on what kind of information you have on your site. If it is mainly a text based site where people come to find information, you will get a better result with text link ads, since people are more able to click on them. If you have a game site people will most likely not click on text links while playing a game and then you are better off with ads where you get paid per impression.
